Georg Bürstmayr was born in Vienna in 1963. From 1981, he studied law and political science at the University of Vienna and the Free University of Berlin, graduating in 1989. For the next six years, he worked as a trainee attorney at the law firm of Dr. Thomas Prader/Dr. Werner Goeritz in Vienna. He has been a registered attorney since 1997, specializing in criminal law, public law, asylum and immigration law, tenancy and housing law, and general practice.
Since 1994, Georg Bürstmayr has been a member of the legal advisor project of the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and a member of the Asylum Lawyers Network. Four years later, Georg Bürstmayr became a contract lawyer for MA 11 of the City of Vienna's Municipal Department, focusing on the legal representation of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in Vienna. Since 2001, he has headed the Higher Regional Court of Vienna 1 Commission of the Human Rights Advisory Council.
Georg Bürstmayr has published numerous articles on immigration and asylum law, human rights, and criminal law. His commitment to asylum seekers and migrants in Austria was recognized with the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Services to Human Rights in 2005.
