Georg Burstmayr (Austria)

Georg Bürstmayr was born in 1963 in Vienna. He started studying law and political science at the University of Vienna and Free University in Berlin. Since 1997 he has been a registered lawyer. He focuses on criminal law, public law, the rights of migrants, and housing law, as well as having a general law practice.

Since 1994 Bürstmayr has been a member of the network of asylum attorneys run by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHCR. His professional life is filled with innumerable activities for refugees. Four years later he became the contract lawyer for the MA 11, the magistrate’s office for the city of Vienna. In this line of work he focuses on the legal representation of unaccompanied minors who are seeking asylum in Vienna. Since 2001 he has been the head human rights adviser of the OLG Commission in Vienna.

Bürstmayr has also published numerous articles on migrants’ rights, asylum right, as well as human rights and criminal law. He was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize in 2005 for his commitment to migrants and people seeking asylum in Austria.
