Queer base (Austria)

Queer Base is an organization of people with and without refugee experience in Vienna that supports refugee lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans and inter persons during their asylum procedure and afterwards. Queer Base is funded by Fonds Soziales Wien and supported by donors. Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans- and interpersons as well as queers (LGBTIQ) are criminalized, threatened by physical, psychological and sexual violence in more than 70 countries around the world. In Austria, it has been possible for quite some time to apply for asylum on the grounds of homophobic or trans persecution under the title of member of a social group. However, there are structural problems that worsen the situation of LGBTIQ refugees. Queer Base organizes specific housing for LGBTIQ refugees in cooperation with organizations such as Lares (Diakonie) and offers refugees a place to find like-minded people and allies in the Turquoise Pink Purple Villa. There is also free support on legal issues and work is being done on a growing network of LGBTIQ interpreters and peer counselors.
