Horst Kleinschmidt (South Africa)

Horst Kleinschmidt was born in 1945 Namibia, but moved to South Africa when he was very young. In Johannesburg he became an assistant of Dr. Beyers Naude in the Christian Institute of South Africa. Since 1979 Horst Kleinschmidt has been a member of the International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (IDAF) in London, and he has been their director since 1984. Kleinschmidt left South Africa in 1976 after being charged and arrested multiple times. Through his work in the IDAF, political prisoners have been legally supported, and their families have been provided for financially and socially. Kleinschmidt has contributed significantly to the protection of human rights in South Africa.

Kleinschmidt worked at the Kagiso Trust from 2000 until 2007. In 2006 he founded the consulting firm „Feike“ in Cape Town. This firm helps fishing communities along the South African Coast. He is also an adviser for the environmental group sea shepherd.
